Picnic Perfect: Best Toddler-Friendly Parks in North San Jose for Spring

The rains have (mostly) stopped, the ground is drying up, and the hills in North San Jose are still impossibly green. It is officially Picnic Season!
For parents in 95132, we often default to the same park every time. But did you know there are some hidden spots perfect for a blanket and a basket of snacks?
As Director Jessie, I know that a "relaxing" picnic with a toddler is wildly different from a picnic with adults. We need containment, we need bathrooms, and we need shade. Here are my top picks.
1. Cataldi Park (The "Everything" Park)
Located right off Morrill Ave, this is a local favorite for a reason.
- Why it works: There are massive trees for shade (vital for that midday sun) and plenty of flat grassy areas specifically near the playground.
- Toddler Bonus: The playground has a separate "tot lot" section that is distinct from the big kid slides, so you don't have to hover quite as much.
- Parking: The lot is small, but street parking on Morrill is usually easy.
2. Penitencia Creek Park (The Nature Walk)
If you want to feel like you left the city without actually leaving Berryessa.
- Why it works: You can picnic near the duck pond (don't feed them bread! use frozen peas or lettuce). The sound of the water is very soothing.
- Toddler Bonus: After eating, you can take a flat, paved stroller walk along the trail. It’s perfect for rocking them to sleep for an outdoor nap.
- Alert: Watch out for geese droppings on the grass closer to the water. Bring a waterproof blanket!
3. Sierra Vista Open Space (The View)
Okay, this is technically up the hill, but the drive up Sierra Road is worth it.
- Why it works: The views of the entire South Bay are breathtaking. It’s quiet and peaceful.
- Toddler Bonus: There isn't a playground, which means the "play" becomes running in the grass and looking at clouds. It’s great for overstimulated kids who need a break from noise.
What to Pack? (Toddler Finger Foods)
Forget sandwiches (they fall apart). Think "Deconstructed Charcuterie."
- Costco Hack: Rotisserie chicken cubes, cheese sticks, and those freeze-dried strawberries.
- From 99 Ranch: Steamed buns (Mantou) are easy to hold and not messy!
- Drink: Freeze their water bottles the night before so it stays cold.
Bilingual Picnic Vocabulary
Everything is more fun when we learn new words!
- Grass: 草地 (Cǎo dì) - "Sit on the Cǎo dì."
- Sun: 太陽 (Tài yáng) - " The Tài yáng is warm."
- Eat: 吃 (Chī) - "Time to Chī!"
- Bird: 小鳥 (Xiǎo niǎo) - "Do you hear the Xiǎo niǎo?"
Community Connection
At Sunny Child Care, we often have potlucks and outdoor gatherings because we believe that raising a child takes a village.
Looking for a community of parents who love the outdoors as much as you do?
