I Can Do It Myself! Teaching Toddlers to Dress Themselves

"I do it!"
If you have a toddler, you've heard this phrase. Usually, it happens when you are running late, and they are trying to put their shoes on the wrong feet.
In San Jose, winter mornings can be chilly, meaning layers, jackets, and socks. It’s tempting to just zip them up yourself to get out the door. But slowing down to teach them how to dress themselves is one of the best confidence boosters you can give them.
Here is how we encourage independence at Sunny Child Care, and how you can do it at home.
1. The "Coat Flip" Trick (Montessori Magic)
Struggling with jackets? This is a game-changer.
- The Setup: Lay the coat on the floor, unzipped, with the hood/collar facing the child's feet. The inside of the coat should be facing up.
- The Action: Have your child stand near the collar (feet by the hood). Tell them to bend down and put their arms into the sleeves.
- The Flip: Then, they lift their arms up over their head. The coat flips perfectly onto their back!
- Why it works: It turns a complex motor skill into a fun, gross-motor movement.
2. Start with "Undressing" First
Taking clothes off is much easier than putting them on.
- The Strategy: Before bath time, encourage them to pull down their own pants or pull off their socks.
- The Win: Mastering "off" gives them the confidence to try "on."
- Tip: Buy clothes with elastic waistbands. Buttons and zippers are advanced skills (usually 3-4 years old). Keep it simple for now.
3. The "Tag Goes in the Back" Rule
Toddlers often get frustrated putting shirts on backward.
- The Strategy: Show them the tag. "The tag kisses the back of your neck."
- No Tag? If the shirt is tagless, you can use a fabric marker to draw a small smiley face on the inside back collar. "Find the smiley face!"
Patience is Key
It will take longer. It will be messy. They might walk out with their shirt inside out. That’s okay! When they succeed, the look of pride on their face is worth the extra 5 minutes.
At Sunny Child Care, we build these "life skills" into our daily curriculum. We believe that capable children are happy children.
