Celebrating Lunar New Year with Toddlers in San Jose: Fun Traditions & Activities

Happy New Year... again! If you live in the Bay Area, we are so lucky to get to celebrate twice. Just as we've packed away the confetti from January 1st, the beautiful red lanterns start popping up around North San Jose and Milpitas.
As Director Jessie, I love this time of year at our center. The energy is electric! But I also know that for our busy parents commuting down Berryessa Road or stuck in traffic on Montague Expressway, adding another holiday can feel a bit overwhelming.
Don't worry—introducing the Lunar New Year to your toddler doesn't have to mean cooking a 10-course banquet. It’s about warmth, color, and connection.
Why teach Lunar New Year to toddlers?
For our families here in 95131, embracing these cultural moments is a huge part of the bilingual advantage. It’s not just about language; it’s about identity and empathy. Even if you don't speak Mandarin at home, joining in the fun helps your child connect with their friends and the vibrant community around us in San Jose.
Simple Sensory Activities for Little Hands
You don't need fancy supplies. Here are a few things we do in our classrooms that you can try at home:
- Red Envelope Sort: Grab a bunch of red envelopes (hongbao) and let your little one practice their fine motor skills by putting play money or gold chocolate coins inside.
- Mandarin Orange Peel: After snack time, let them smell and play with the orange peels. It’s a great sensory experience!
- Dragon Dance Freeze: Put on some drum music and dance like a dragon, then freeze! It's great for getting energy out on a rainy day.
Director Jessie's Tip: "Keep it simple. Toddlers care more about doing things with you than the perfect result. A messy dumpling made together is tastier than a perfect one made alone!"
Where can I find Lunar New Year events for toddlers in San Jose?
We are blessed with so many options! The San Jose joyful celebration often has kid-friendly areas. If you prefer something quieter, I love taking a walk through the Cultural Park Gardens just to see the decorations. It’s a great way to talk about colors—Red (Hóng) and Gold (Jīn).
Remember, the goal is to plant a seed of joy associated with the culture. Whether you're driving past Ranch 99 seeing the decorations or reading a bilingual book at bedtime, you are doing a great job.
Happy Lunar New Year from all of us at Sunny Child Care!
