Spring Forward: Handling the Daylight Savings Sleep Regression (2026 Edition)

Mark your calendars, San Jose parents: Sunday, March 8th, 2026 is Daylight Savings Time. We "Spring Forward," which means we lose an hour of sleep. But for toddlers, it often means we lose a whole week of sanity!
Suddenly, 7:00 PM feels like 6:00 PM. The sun is still shining bright over the Santa Cruz Mountains, and your toddler is screaming, "I'm not tired! It's daytime!"
As Director Jessie, I see the "Daylight Savings Drag" in our classrooms every March. The kids are cranky, and the parents are exhausted. But don't panic! You can beat the jet lag without leaving 95132.
1. The "15-Minute Rule" (Start Early)
Don't wait until Sunday night to change the schedule. Start shifting now.
- Thursday: Put them to bed 15 minutes earlier (e.g., 7:45 PM instead of 8:00 PM).
- Friday: Shift another 15 minutes (7:30 PM).
- Saturday: Shift again (7:15 PM).
- Sunday: By the time the clock changes, their body is already adjusted to the new 8:00 PM.
2. Light is the Enemy (and the Friend)
Our internal clocks are set by sunlight.
- Evening: Because it stays light later in Berryessa, you must make the room dark. invest in good blackout curtains. Even a sliver of light tells their brain "Party time!"
- Morning: This is the hard part. It will be darker in the morning. Turn on all the lights immediately when they wake up to signal "Daytime."
3. Get Outside in the Morning
To reset their circadian rhythm, you need bright natural light before noon.
- Weekend Plan: Take a morning walk at Penitencia Creek Park or let them run around at Alum Rock Park.
- Why: Morning sunlight suppresses melatonin and helps them feel tired earlier that night.
4. Be Patient (The "Grumpy Week")
Even with the best planning, next week might be rough.
- Forgive the tantrums: They are literally jet-lagged.
- Stick to the routine: Don't let bedtime slide to 9:00 PM just because they aren't tired. Keep the routine calm and consistent.
Sleep is the Foundation of Learning
At Sunny Child Care, we know that a well-rested child is a happy learner. That’s why we have a dedicated nap time with soothing music and dim lights to help them recharge.
