The First Drop-Off: A Guide from Director Jessie

The "Parking Lot Tears" Are Real (And That's Okay)
I’ve been the Director at Sunny Child Care in San Jose for over 10 years, and I have a confession: I still get emotional on the first day of school. Not for the kids—they are usually playing happily within five minutes—but for you, the parents.
I’ve seen moms crying in their cars in our parking lot. I’ve seen dads lingering by the window, just checking "one last time."
It is completely normal. Dropping your child off at preschool for the first time is a huge milestone. It means they are growing up. But trust me, we’ve got this. Here is my "Director’s Guide" to a tear-free (or at least, less tearful) first day.
1. The "Band-Aid" Method (Quick & Confident)
This is the hardest one, but it works. When it’s time to go, give a big hug, a confident smile, and say, "I love you, I’ll be back after snack time!" And then—this is the key—leave.
If you hesitate, look sad, or keep coming back for "one more hug," your child thinks, Wait, is something wrong? Why is Mommy worried? Should I be worried?
Director’s Tip: Fake it ‘til you make it! Even if you are nervous inside, show your child a brave face. They look to you to know how to feel.
2. Bring a Piece of Home
Transitioning to a new environment in San Jose can be overwhelming. We encourage children to bring a small comfort object for nap time—a favorite blanket, a small plushie, or even a family photo.
Having a familiar scent or texture helps them feel safe when they need a little extra comfort during the day.
3. Create a "Reunion Ritual"
Instead of focusing on the goodbye, focus on the hello. Promise something specific for when you return. "When I pick you up, we will go to the park" or "We will have your favorite snack."
This gives your child a concrete event to look forward to and helps them understand that you always come back.
You Are Doing Great
Sending your child to preschool is an act of love. You are giving them the gift of socialization, learning, and independence.
If you are looking for a preschool in San Jose that understands both the child's needs and the parent's heart, come visit us. I promise I have a box of tissues ready in my office if you need them!
