Rainy Day Survival Guide: 3 Indoor Activities for San Jose Toddlers

When the Rain Won't Stop
Living in San Jose, we are used to sunshine. But when December hits, the rain can sometimes last for days. And if you have a high-energy toddler at home, "rainy days" can quickly turn into "chaos days."
I hear it from parents at drop-off all the time: "Jessie, he was bouncing off the walls yesterday! We couldn't go to the park, and I ran out of ideas."
Cabin fever is real. But you don't need fancy toys or an iPad to survive a rainy weekend. Here at Sunny Child Care, we are experts at indoor play. Here are three low-prep activities that turn a gloomy day into an adventure.
1. The "Amazon Box" Castle
Let's be honest, with the holidays coming up, you probably have a stack of delivery boxes in your garage. Don't recycle them yet!
To a toddler, a cardboard box is not trash; it's a spaceship, a castle, or a cave.
Director Jessie's Tip: Give them some crayons and stickers and let them "decorate" their new house. It builds creativity and keeps them occupied for a surprisingly long time.
2. The Living Room Obstacle Course
Toddlers need to move their bodies (proprioceptive input) to stay calm. If they can't run outside, let them climb inside—safely.
Use sofa cushions, pillows, and blankets to build a soft obstacle course. "Jump over the river (blue blanket)," "Crawl through the tunnel (chairs)," "Roll down the mountain (cushions)."
Try this: Time them! "Can you do it in 10 seconds?" It adds excitement and burns off that extra energy.
3. Sensory Rescue: The "Rice Bin"
Sensory play is magical for calming a restless child. You don't need a fancy table.
Take a large plastic storage bin, pour in a bag of uncooked rice (or dry pasta), and throw in some measuring cups and spoons. The sound and texture of the rice are incredibly soothing for little nervous systems.
(Note: Always supervise to ensure they don't eat the raw rice!)
